FAQs

Do I need a piano?

Ideally, yes, but some of my pupils practise on keyboards. I teach at home on an upright Steinway piano.

How often should I come for a lesson?

Pupils tend to practise more when they come for weekly lessons, but I can sometimes offer fortnightly lessons if needed.

How long is a lesson?

I usually suggest half an hour for beginners and an hour for pupils who have reached Grade1 standard. However, some pupils choose to come for hour right from the start.

Do I need to practise every day?

You should aim to practise five times a week and have two days to either rest or simply play through pieces for the sheer pleasure of it!

Which music books will I need?

I use a range of teaching materials with my pupils and will suggest the right books for you once we have decided what will help you to learn best. Some of my pupils bring materials they have used with former teachers and I’m happy to see if these are still appropriate for you. You will also need a blank, A5 notebook for me to write down your practice schedule.

Will I have to take exams?

No. I enter pupils for Associated Board exams when appropriate but some pupils choose to simply learn and play for pleasure. The choice is yours.

Can I sit in on my child’s lesson?

Yes. I encourage parents to occasionally sit in on their child’s lesson, as it is a very good way for them to understand my expectations regarding practice.

What if I am late dropping off or picking up my child?

Unfortunately, time lost at the start of the lesson cannot be made up as I usually have pupils following on from each lesson. If necessary, your child may sit in the hallway outside my music studio and wait until you arrive.

Do you teach additional lessons outside of the academic year?

Yes. Pupils often request ‘top-up’ lessons during the summer and immediately prior to exams. These are billed for individually and at the usual price.

What happens if I miss a lesson?

I will try to find you another slot in my weekly schedule but this isn’t always possible. Payment for lessons can only be refunded in exceptional circumstances.

As an adult, I sometimes take holidays during term time? Can you accommodate this?

Unfortunately, I only offer lessons on a termly basis. Please contact me for further information.

Are you fully DBS checked?

Yes. I am happy to show you my certificate upon request.

Are you GDPR compliant?

Yes. I keep a minimum of information on file: pupils’ contact details and any feedback sheets following exams. I hold this information for five years after pupils cease having lessons in the event a pupil wants to resume studying with me. Please contact me for further information.
